Irish Pennywhistle Basics

Lovers of Irish music, stand up and dance a jig to one of our hands-on Irish music workshops!  Both clinics are designed for absolute beginners, although people with some experience are welcome to join us.  This workshop is on the "penny whistle," or "tin whistle" -- the source of sweet, lyrical sounds in the high register in Irish music.  (For you wind instrument people, the penny whistle is a six-hole simple-system flute that uses a mouthpiece with a thipple instead of an embouchure hole to generate sound, and it has a useful range of almost two octaves.)

Dean Karras, award winning Bodhrán player and Lilter will be conducting both this workshop and a Bodhrán (drum) workshop. As Dean says, in the early 90s, Irish music grabbed him "firmly by the heart" and has not loosened its grip yet. His first Irish instrument was a set of spoons; these were quickly followed by Bodhrán and tin whistle, and eventually Uilleann bagpipes. A sought after teacher, Dean has taught Bodhrán clinics from the Carolinas to Colorado.  If you love Irish music, come join us!  Door prizes for those able to correctly pronounce "the Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann Midwestern Regional Fleadh."

Dean will be teaching primarily "by ear," so if you have a recording device, it might be useful to bring it.  And, of course, if you happen to have a regular/soprano penny whistle in the key of D, bring that too! A limited supply of free whistles will be available.
